Big Brown's loss overshadowed the winner...who was that anyway?...Oh yeah, Da' Tara. You wouldn't have known that by all the syndicated press photos...they were all of the horse who came in dead last! No one's saying what really happened...there was a crack in the horse's front left hoof, there was the confession of the trainer that he used anabolic steroids to boost Big Brown's appetite and weight (legal by the way in the three states where the Triple Crown races are held)...and the horse was given lasix, who knows, maybe he was dehydrated and experienced electrolyte imbalance on a 90s day...there will always be speculation I suppose.
I was touched to hear that the owner said win or lose, he was emotionally attached to Big Brown and would always love him...probably doesn't hurt that he has $50 million dollar breeding rights deal.
Big Brown did not show up on horse racing's biggest stage...makes me think about my high expectations for award-winning outcomes and performance in healthcare...then there's the stunning "loss" when something went wrong...and we ask ourselves what happened? Let's take care to cautiously boast about what we do well and the excellent care we provide, but always be on guard, raise the bar for consistent quality and service, and determine to win every race.
